Is Your Bra Too Big?

We often discuss how a bra that’s too small can not only be uncomfortable, but can actually cause you pain.

But what happens if your bra is too big?

A bra that’s too big isn’t going to give you the support you need from a bra, and is just as bad for your breasts, your posture, and your comfort as one that is too small. So maybe you’ve lost some weight or your body is changing as you get older- you should know what the signs are that you need to get a smaller bra. After pregnancy, your breasts may also shrink and change shape, so chances are you’ll need a smaller bra post-pregnancy.

The first thing you should do before looking at your bras is either measure yourself or get a fitting by a professional. Sometimes, your band size OR your cup size is wrong – not both. For example, you may be wearing a 38D, but really need a 38C because your breasts aren’t as plump as they used to be. Moreover, you may have lost a few pounds and your back has become smaller, but your breast has not, so you need to go down a band size.

After you check your size, look at your bras and see if you see any of these signs in your bras too.

Cups Gaping

The top of the cups sit flush on her breast. | Flirt Demi Lace Underwire Bra by Montelle Intimates

If you notice the top of your cups don’t sit flush with your breast, your bra is too big. Your cups should sit comfortably on your breast and encapsulate all of it.

This can be especially easy to miss if you wear demi cup styles.

Centre Gore Doesn’t Sit Flat

The centre gore (the centre of the bra) is flat. | Cloud 9 Underwire Contour Lift Bra With Lace Back and Front Closure by Warner’s

The centre of your bra where your underwires meet should sit flat between your breasts. If you notice it rise up or bunch up, your bra is too big.

Your Back Band Rides Up

The back sits like a straight line. | Tess Unlined Wire Bra by Parfait Lingerie

You might thing your back band riding up your back is a sign it’s too small – it’s actually the opposite.

If your back band is too big, you’ll notice it doesn’t sit straight on your back as you move around.

Your Breasts Move A Lot

Your boobs are meant to stay put in your bra. That’s kind of the whole point of your bra!

If you notice a little too much wiggle, it may be because you have too much extra room in your cups.
